By scientific estimates, half of the planet must be protected if we are to stop a staggering loss of biodiversity. Loss of Arctic sea ice is altering the habitats, feeding patterns and primary production of ice-associated species. Damage to the Arctic Ocean seabed from commercial fishing trawls, underwater noise pollution from seismic survey for oil and gas exploration, military sonar and deployment of explosives are additional threats to this vulnerable ecosystem.
The Marine Arctic Peace Sanctuary (MAPS) boldly resolves multiple key and pivotal global issues in a single visionary act of conservation. By establishing the Arctic Ocean north of the Arctic Circle as an international marine protected area free from commercialization and militarization, MAPS safeguards sea ice from pollution and ice break-up, and maintaining peace. It is not an end goal, but a baseline necessity.
The Arctic Ocean has always been a natural sanctuary, one our whole world needs now more than ever.
