I am a Kankana-ey Igorot from the Cordillera Region in the Philippines. I am an indigenous activist and human rights expert with a long experience in organizing indigenous peoples' organizations and institutions, drafting and getting the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples adopted by the UN General Assembly as well as helping push for the establishment of spaces for indigenous peoples in the United Nations. I was the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples from 2014-2020 and was the Chair of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues from 2004-2009. As the UN Special Rapporteur I prepared and presented to the UN General Assembly a report on " Indigenous Peoples and Conservation " in 2016. This dealt with the impacts of conservation on the human rights of indigenous people and contain recommendations to states, conservation organizations and donors.
