Dr Makere STEWART-HARAWIRA

Professor, University of Alberta

The Department of Educational Policy Studies and leads the I-STEAM Pathways Indigenous Environmental Education internship program at the University of Alberta. A contributing author to the IPCC 6th Global Assessment, AR6 Climate Change 2022: Impacts, Adaptation & Vulnerability, Dr. Stewart-Harawira is actively engaged in freshwater issues in Aotearoa New Zealand and Western Canada. Since moving to Canada in 2004, she has worked closely with First Nations communities on freshwater issues and is a National Board member of the Indigenous-led NGO, Keepers of the Water, Canada. Her research interests are: global transformation, climate change impacts, and vulnerabilities, freshwater governance, multispecies justice. Dr. Stewart-Harawira is of New Zealand Maori descent & registered member of the Waitaha ki Te Waipounamu tribe.
