Head Red List Unit, Global Species Programme, IUCN

I have headed the IUCN Red List Unit for the past 22 years; the unit is responsible for overseeing the production and maintenance of The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. My responsibilities include project development, fund-raising, planning and management, implementation of projects, managing staff, facilitating workshops, etc. My work requires liaison with a network of species experts, conservation organizations, and with governments and inter-governmental conservation bodies. Prior to joining IUCN, I worked for the South African National Biodiversity Institute on in situ and ex situ plant conservation matters, including the creation of a national plant Red List programme, identification of key plant areas, ex situ conservation policy for botanic gardens, and representing national government at inter-governmental conservation treaty meetings. I also have several years’ experience running field projects to identify local conservation priorities.
