Recent evidence of biodiversity collapse in the Mediterranean region : Which solutions to implement ?

We face unprecedented global environmental challenges that are a clear consequence of the growing human population's demand for resources. The Mediterranean basin, a region of the world where natural resources have ensured the prosperity of societies for millennia, must also face these new challenges. The future appears even more uncertain here than the global average due to the combination of more rapid climate change and stronger anthropogenic drivers of environmental degradation. We have the necessary tools to protect our environment, however time is running out. Tour du Valat and SPA/RAC are joining forces to provide new scientific evidence of the collapse of Mediterranean biodiversity. This unambiguous statement calls for cross-sectoral policies that place healthy ecosystems as the foundation for sustainable development. Solutions to be implemented in the coming years will be discussed, focusing on the restoration of marine and coastal ecosystems.
