Many digital technologies have been emerging that can be of use for natural resources management, but what can they really bring to nature conservationists at the local levels? This session represents a deep dive with lessons learned of using satellite images, GIS, drones, mobile apps, sound recordings, camera traps, and artificial learning.

This session contains an overview of lessons learned in using emerging digital technologies for environmental monitoring. A variety of digital technologies (such as satellite imagery, GIS, drones, artificial intelligence, sound recordings, mobile apps, etc.) for nature conservation with their pros and cons will be highlighted by presenting field experiences of CSO in South America, Africa, and Asia. Not only the technologies will be discussed but also the key-principles in designing and implementing a project with local CSOs and community members, and how this can produce new knowledge and insights that support natural resources management and advocacy. An outlook of upcoming approaches and technologies will be presented, such as the potential of citizen science, machine learning, and rapid alert systems. Interaction with participants to share knowledge and experiences will be a key element of the session.
