The workshop will present the outcomes of the 44th session of the World Heritage Committee and the findings of the IUCN World Heritage Outlook to investigate how well the Convention is achieving its goal in conserving natural World Heritage sites. Through panel discussion, participants will address the big challenges facing the Convention, including how to achieve a respectful, mutually beneficial relationship between World Heritage and Indigenous Peoples and Local Communities, as well as striking the right balance between conserving globally precious World Heritage sites and pursuing societal sustainable development agendas. The outcomes of these discussions will be presented, with a view to establishing the role of IUCN in addressing these issues and identifying the most important messages for the Convention going into its 50th anniversary year.
