This workshop will offer perspectives from youth, community leaders, local governments, associations, and civil society on the importance of safeguarding at least 30% of the global ocean by 2030 with a major emphasis on community leadership. Speakers will include representatives from Hawaii, French Polynesia, Palau, United States, and France. Panel discussions will highlight the experience of people living on islands with Large-Scale Marine Protected Areas (LSMPAs) and the sharing for benefits from protected areas for ecosystems, fisheries, culture, and local communities. The session, organized by a gender and age balanced team, will ensure the global community hears from a diverse set of voices. Speakers will be present both in-person and via video address, and there will be opportunities for online engagement as well as Q&A with virtual attendees.
