Setting the Mediterranean Context. High Level Panel

The Mediterranean, one of the richest ecoregions in biodiversity and ecosystem values, a melting pot of cultures and the home of outstanding traditions of natural resource management, is in danger. Its nature is threatened by many drivers, from perverse economic incentives to climate change. Pollution, destructive wildfires, overexploitation of fisheries, unsustainable land uses, uncontrolled tourism and other factors are leading to environmental degradation. The region is also affected by poverty and low levels of human development. To face the challenges, a multitude of initiatives have emerged – governments, communities, NGOs, businesses, international organizations, are creating alliances that strive for a sustainable, healthy, culturally diverse and prosperous Mediterranean. What are their chances of success and the best paths to follow? This session sets out the context and provides questions and thoughts to guide the discussions in the search for Mediterranean Solutions .
