Freshwater ecosystems all across the world are under threat, in Europe our last free-flowing rivers are home to endemic threatened species as well as create livelihoods for local communities. The Balkan region is a home to many of the most intact, the most precious and the most beautiful rivers in continental Europe characterized with spectacular landscapes – deep chasms, stunning waterfalls, untamed wildernesses, extensive underground karst systems, and, precious floodplains. They are the most important hotspot for endangered fish and mollusk species which make up the two most threatened taxonomic groups in Europe. In this session, we will present to you the first European wide overview of the biggest threat to these riverine ecosystems: Hydropower developments. By presenting various tools and mechanisms created in the context of the “Save the Blue Heart of Europe” campaign, including an ECO-masterplan, we will discuss how to preserve these last free-flowing rivers.
