In 2014, the International Union for Conservation of Nature adopted the Red List of Ecosystems (RLE) criteria as the global standard for assessing risks to terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems. This session will present two new tools developed by the RLE program, which will support improved ecosystem conservation, management and policy: the Global Ecosystem Typology, and the RLE database. The Global Ecosystem Typology is a scientific advance in understanding of ecosystem function and biodiversity, for use in conservation, management and natural capital accounting world-wide. The database is a new repository for storing, managing and accessing RLE assessments, allowing comparison across assessments globally. As well as supporting conservation practitioners, the Typology and Database will also provide education platforms for the general public, enhancing understanding of ecosystems and nature. The session will finish with a discussion between the audience and presenters.
