Michèle Pfab has a Masters in Resource Conservation Biology from the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. She has worked in government in South Africa for almost 25 years now, first at a provincial level where she managed a systematic biodiversity plan to identify and protect sensitive biodiversity areas in a rapidly urbanizing environment, and now at a national level where she manages a programme of work for the assessment, monitoring and research of species in trade to support decision making on sustainable use. She is currently the scientific co-ordinator for South Africa's CITES Scientific Authority and has extensive experience in policy formulation and environmental legislation. She has attended several CITES CoPs as part of the South African delegation and provides scientific decision support on both plant and animal matters.
