How to influence mining developments to secure better outcomes for nature and people

From a conservation and livelihoods perspective, engagement with the mining sector is a major imperative: there is no mainstream global economic scenario where mining does not continue to feature as a major player over the long-term. The direct and indirect impacts of mining projects are significant. Ideally, companies should follow international best practice to avoid and reduce their impacts. At a minimum, companies are often required to contribute to economic and social development. In addition to directly engaging mining companies, evidence is showing that it can be very effective to influence and enable good practices through engaging with governments and lenders to mining developments, or the general public. Participants will: Become familiar with tools and approaches that will help them understand the context with respect to mining and their local and international enabling environment; Learn from peers who have successfully influenced mining developments
