Saving Plants – Saving the World

With a focus on the future, the session will identify and feature successful and innovative elements of the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) up to 2020. It will discuss how to build on these elements to develop a future action agenda using the proposed new plant conservation targets as a basis. Through a combination of short presentations and facilitated discussions, the session will discuss the relevance and importance of having specific plant targets within the post-2020 biodiversity framework. Amongst other topics, it will look at what is required to conserve all plant species of conservation concern (threatened, restricted range and socio-economically important plants) in connected functional landscapes; how plants and plant conservationists can support the establishment of greener, more climate resilient urban habitats; the role of horticulture in protecting, restoring and maintaining terrestrial landscapes; and how to highlight the plight of plants.
