The IUCN Green List - a standard for conservation of protected and conserved areas

This session will provide a comprehensive introduction to the IUCN Green List of Protected and Conserved Area Standard by stepping participants through the standard and the Green List process, guided by practitioners from around the world who are actively working in this programme. There will be small group discussions on key topics.

The session provides a guide to the IUCN Green List standard and program aimed at decision makers and practitioners. The elements of the Green List programme are examined, working through short introductory presentations followed by practitioner-led discussion tables around actual examples and participant issues. Topics covered include: 1 Overview of the Green List, 2 Implementing the Green List in a jurisdiction, 3 Anatomy of the Green List - the standard dissected and examined 4 Empowering local knowledge and expertise through Expert Assessment Groups (EAGL), 5 Good governance and equity and how they are assessed 6. Using IUCN knowledge products (e.g. PA Categories, Red List) in the Green List process. 7. Defining successful conservation outcomes – the definition of “successful conservation” and its application in the Green List, 8. Monitoring and setting thresholds - an analysis of approaches and case studies. A follow-up process will be used to address any outstanding questions.
