Despite the increase of Marine Protected Area (MPAs) coverage in the Mediterranean, the objective of maintaining marine biodiversity is far from being met. MPAs are facing several pressures and still lack human capacity, skills and financial resources to be effectively managed.
Networks of MPA managers are successful in sharing knowledge and best management practices through effective communication and capacity building. They allow for exchanges between managers with common issues in different local contexts, and generate creativity, problem solving and resource sharing. They build “MPA communities” at all levels.
Networks of MPA managers enable working on MPAs with a new dynamic, by strengthening and connecting MPA managers at national, supra-national, Mediterranean levels and on key topics. Strong and active human networks will help to achieve international commitments on MPAs.
This dynamic is supported by the Interreg MED Programme, the MAVA Foundation, the FFEM.
