The contribution of Anthropology to the nature/culture debate and biodiversity conservation

¿Por qué asistir a esta sesión?
This session, at the crossroads of IUCN's themes, addresses the nature/culture debate and the conservation of biodiversity from an anthropological perspective. It questions the possibilities for a shift of paradigm in conservation.
HideDescripción
Beyond the great issue of “how to achieve biodiversity conservation, from plants to landscapes, including agrobiodiversity?”, there are multiple other questions about the place and role of humans facing this challenge, especially concerning local and indigenous people in all their diversity. Debates on choices and strategies for biodiversity conservation are acute. While conservation relates to species and ecosystems, the conservation actions arise from human behaviors that mobilize environmental ethics, social representations, rights, etc. They bring different worldviews into contact, if not confrontation, and generate power relations, which raise questions of equity and social justice. The complex relations between biodiversity and society, and between biodiversity and cultural diversity, are thus at the core of biodiversity conservation challenges.
