Family planning and the environment
Family planning is a recognised human right. Hundreds of millions of people, worldwide, face barriers to exercising this right. These barriers impact human and environmental health, and the wellbeing and empowerment of women and girls. Removing these barriers is relevant and appropriate for conservationists, for the sake of our missions, for the lives of women and children, and for a better world.
MPT is the only IUCN Member with 50 years’ expertise in family planning. Whether we are providing training to doctors, developing conservation projects responding to connected human and environmental health challenges, or working to change conservation policy, we are committed to reproductive health and rights.
The SDGs call for “integration” a much talked about and very little implemented concept. This stand focuses on how sectors can work together to improve human and environmental health by providing health services, focussing on gender, and protecting rights. We promote Motion 087 - Importance for the conservation of nature of removing barriers to rights based voluntary family planning.
