Advocacy Officer, Defenders Coalition- Kenya

Winnie Sengwer is an indigenous woman from the Sengwer Indigenous Community found in Embobut Forest in Elgeiyo Marakwet County, Kabolet Forest in Trans Nzoia County, and West Pokot County in Kenya. She is an Advocacy officer at the National Coalition of Human Rights Defenders Kenya- Defenders Coalition. Winnie is passionate about indigenous people's human rights issues that include land rights, climate change, biodiversity conservation, and her advocacy revolves around it. She works towards the protection of the shrinking civic space in Kenya while advocating for laws and policies that are favorable to the work of Human Rights Defenders in Kenya. She is a fellow at the Indigenous Women Global Leadership School 2020 where she got training on strengthening and building capacities for indigenous women to have the tools they need to defend and claim their rights and be better prepared for decision-making in various spaces.
