Indigenous Peoples thoughts and strategies in facing the tipping point in the Amazon

Why attend
Learn about the situation/ strategies of indigenous peoples and support organizations in response to the tipping point in the Amazon. Key aspects that will be brought up in this session are challenges for indigenous territories in the Amazon and nature-based strategies to maintain climate stability and promoting indigenous people's wellbeing.
HideDescription
As the Amazon nears an irreversible tipping point – a catastrophe for human and planetary wellbeing - indigenous peoples are a key part of the response to this global challenge. More than 200 million hectares of forests and ecosystems that have legal recognition by the government are protected by three million people belonging to more than 500 indigenous communities of the Amazon. These ancestral custodians are key players in strategizing to fight the climate crisis, pollution, the destruction of the biome, and the loss of our planet’s biodiversity. Still, on a global level, indigenous knowledge, practices, and ideas of development are threatened by increased deforestation, fires, massive infrastructure projects, drug trafficking, illegal mining, expansion of livestock, the COVID 19 health emergency, and the ongoing violent predation of nature. In this context, indigenous territories are strongholds to maintain the health of the Amazon and require incentives to restore degraded areas
