WOMEN & THE TRADITIONAL - POWERFUL ACTORS AND DRIVING FORCE FOR CHANGE IN RURAL ENVIRONMENTS

This session is addressed to anyone who is willing to start the journey of community enterprise at a local level. It is available to anyone who is passionate about natural resources, their traditional use and conservation. It is a creative and transforming process, one that has the power to respond to all local needs.

Women have been underestimated for their important contribution to producing and securing food, managing natural resources, and their ability to earn an income through these activities. Massive aid budgets from the major donors are allocated to expand Morocco’s programs to combat poverty, social exclusion and gender inequality; however, rural women are still poorly integrated in Moroccan society. Women’s social enterprise on the other hand, offers the possibility to restore dignity, socio-economic development, and empowerment. This session explores the role of rural women for social enterprise to optimize social economic conditions and how this contributes to the well being and health and sustainable natural resource management. Ultimately, this transits via the integration and recognition of traditional practices. Based on extensive ethnographic research conducted in isolated regions of Morocco, the author will discuss the tools that are available at community level.

The Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit Sharing (ABS) aims to encourage fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of genetic resources. The EU-funded MBABS project will explore the ABS agreement and its impact on Indian farmers, growers and rural women as regards medicinal and aromatic plants exploited by corporations. The project will first focus on the factors that determine the attribution of benefits. Second, it will analyse the short and long-term impact of ABS on local communities, socio-economic conditions, social status, the retention of traditional knowledge and resource sustainability. Third, it will explore the role of women in ABS, considering it is a male-dominated domain. Eventually, the results of the project will be used for the attention of other countries, such as Morocco.

A Gendered Analysis of the Income Generating Activities under the Green Morocco Plan: Who Profits?

Since 2005, major donors have been expanding Morocco's programs to combat poverty, social exclusion and gender inequality. However, despite newly designed programs that advocate participatory approaches, empowerment and inclusion, rural women do not integrate easily in Moroccan society. This article explores the latest strategies of the Green Morocco Plan (GMP) and the income generating activities (IGA) strategies that seek to support the employment and autonomy of rural women.

Why women's traditional knowledge matters in the production processes of natural product development: The case of the Green Morocco Plan
In Morocco, Traditional Knowledge is increasingly incorporated into natural products derived from natural resources as policies advocate the creation of income generating activities via cooperatives; these initiatives ultimately seek to empower rural women economically. The study reveals that the women's traditional knowledge is readily integrated in the development of natural products, vital in product development, yet not officially acknowledged by the employers and national legislation.
