Urban Nature and Environmental Human Rights

Why attend
In the context of a climate and biodiversity crisis, and in an urbanising world, human rights are crucial for conservation and environmental justice. Mexican political scientist and rising conservation leader Inés Hernández will present the findings she gathered researching the potential to enhance urban nature through a rights-based approach.
HideDescription
Inés Hernández recently completed her MPhil in Conservation Leadership at the University of Cambridge. As part of her program, she teamed up with the IUCN Urban Alliance from June to August 2021 to research the intersection of human rights, nature, and urban development. She studied the potential to enhance biodiversity conservation through the recognition, protection, and fulfilment of environmental human rights in cities, providing a set of recommendations for IUCN on how to meaningfully contribute to this purpose. This session will be a presentation of the results found by Inés. These are some of the questions that will guide the discussion: - What is the current and potential legal basis for recognising environmental human rights in cities? - What precedent exists globally for governments to legislate in this direction? - What would be the implications of such recognition for the planning, governance and management of urban areas, for people and for nature?
