Indigenous Leadership: Changing our Approach to Conservation in Aotearoa, New Zealand

Why attend
To learn about a transformational approach that combines traditional knowledge/practices with science in Aotearoa (New Zealand) and how Ngati Kuri (an Iwi/tribe) is engaging partners to increase participation of our youth in science and conservation, achieving holistic social and environmental outcomes.
HideDescription
This session will present an example of how our indigenous leadership has been effective in changing the way that science and conservation practitioners traditionally work – to be more in-line with traditional values and therefore more effective. We will present concrete examples of this integrated way of working along with some of the long-term outcomes. The perspectives from which you will hear include an indigenous female leader, and a member of our younger generation. We will explain how we have reached out to our Pacific relatives to form a network of indigenous ocean leaders because, we believe, through collectivising on an international scale, we can overcome limiting jurisdictional boundaries to achieve holistic environmental and social outcomes.
