Candidate info

Particular qualifications to be a Regional Councillor:
I have worked in international biodiversity conservation, at the intersection of science and policy, for many years. I have worked closely with IUCN (Commissions, Members, Specialist Groups, Secretariat), both when I worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and for NGOs, including currently at WCS. I have lived, studied, and worked in multiple countries, and I will bring diversity (including of experience) to the IUCN Council. I am deeply committed to working in collaboration to find and implement solutions for the current biodiversity conservation crisis, and to enabling IUCN members and IUCN structures to collaborate to the fullest extent possible. I have been active in the SSC, as a member of the Steering Committee for four years and as a member of the Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Specialist Group. I have also worked closely with IUCN delegates at multiple intergovernmental fora (e.g., CITES, CMS, CBD, World Heritage). I have attended several IUCN Congresses, through which I engaged actively with both the Forum and Members’ Assembly. I also have strong Board experience (e.g., member of the TRAFFIC Committee 2001–2009, current member of the Board of the Amphibian and Reptile Conservancy (U.S. NGO), and Chair of the Board of WCS-Canada). Through my work at WCS, and previous employers, I have significant organizational governance experience. I am deeply committed to the mission of IUCN, and to ensuring that it is a strong voice for conservation.

Experience in fields of concern to IUCN:

I have worked in international biodiversity conservation, at the intersection of science and policy, for my entire professional career. Currently, I direct and lead WCS’s policy engagement in multiple intergovernmental fora, including CITES, CMS, CBD, and the UNESCO-World Heritage Convention, and I am actively engaged with the CBD post-2020 biodiversity framework. I am the focal point for WCS on the Key Biodiversity Areas Committee. I am committed to supporting field conservation through policy and intergovernmental engagement, working closely with governments, intergovernmental organizations including IUCN, NGOs, and others – particularly by promoting science-based decision-making. I have extensive career experience in both wildlife trade, and efforts to combat wildlife trafficking. I obtain my Ph.D. in tropical ecology from the University of Southern California (working on amphibians and reptiles), where I also did postdoctoral research. I am committed to mentoring young scientists and other professionals to find meaningful careers in conservation. I am also committed to working with the IUCN Council, Secretariat, Commissions, and Members, to take strong, bold actions to address the current biodiversity conservation crisis. Finally, I would be honoured to serve as IUCN Regional Councillor.
